Spray Control, Nozzle By Nozzle

Called the Smart Nozzle system, this new technology provides automatic on and off control of individual nozzles based on a field map. When the system encounters field borders or any areas of the map marked as “no apply” zones, the system will turn off individual nozzles as they enter the zones.

Run through a generic CAN module, the system is designed it to be a generic CAN node that wil accept anybodys sensor input or drive anybody’s actuators, says John Harrison, product engineer. Specific design elements allow the system to efficiently and effectively respond and maintain accuracy.

The actual solenoids are designed to be daisy-chained together to accommodate any size boom. One CAN node will drive two separate actuators.

Harrison says that there has been some interest from nozzle manufacturers in adding a third selenoid to the system and tying them to three individual orifices to create a variable rate application system.

In the future, Harrison hopes to get the system completely ISOBUS compliant so users do not need a separate controller in the cab to use the system.

Harrison says that after two years of hard field testing at retail operations, the unit is fully ready for wide distribution and has generated a lot of interest.

“Everyone is trying to squeeze every bit out of every acre they have, and if you look at field geometry some folks are experiencing as much as 15-20% overlap,” he says. We can get that down to less than 1 %, and if you pencil that out, that’s tremendous savings. For a cooperative that charges by the acre, chemical that is not applied incorrectly is found money.”
