Talking Technology At The Beltwide

In a few weeks, I’ll be headed for the Beltwide Cotton Conferences to get the feeling “on the ground” about what we can expect next season. After a freakish year that saw cotton acreage drop dramatically, the talk now is of a flat cotton year in 2008 … and folks that are growing cotton are in need of strategies that enhance the profitability of the operation.

Technology use can be a key part of a long term strategy to grow cotton, and I’m pleased to be acting as the moderator for a workshop on Thursday, January 9 at 2 pm CST entitled, “Precision Management of Production Costs: Standardized Record Keeping For Cotton’s New World”.

Cotton Incorporated, Red Wing Software, and MapShots have worked to develop a precision standardized software system to help growers determine and manage their true production costs of cotton and other crops, while allowing for comparisons and benchmarking across regions, farms, and counties. The modular program they will be discussing includes mapping, accounting, field records and harvest records all in one system, along with the capability to interface with other precision agriculture equipment or programs, as well as with gins.

I’m excited because I’ll be leading the discussion with some of the best and brightest minds in cotton and precision technology, including growers Larkin Martin and Don Glenn, Jeanne Reaves from Cotton Inc., Tim Taylor from MapShots and Ken Hilton from Red Wing.

Let’s face it … U.S. cotton growers need to be as competitive, efficient, and profitable as possible in the global economy. This session at the Beltwide Cotton Conferences, not to mention getting immersed in the entire Beltwide experience, is a step forward. I hope to see you there!
