Speak Up For Science Petition Open

“On behalf of the AAAS, we—as researchers, professionals, students and interested citizens in the science, technology, engineering and math fields—write to ask both branches of government to work together to achieve a bipartisan compromise that moves the country on to sound fiscal footing without sacrificing our nation’s crucial investments in science and technology. Almost every national priority—from health and defense, agriculture and conservation, to hazards and natural disasters—relies on science and engineering. As another fiscal cliff approaches, placing a significant burden on federal research and development investments, as sequestration would do, is nothing less than a threat to national competitiveness. Support for science is support for economic growth, innovation, and technological progress. Please consider this as you seek to address our nation’s pressing fiscal challenges.”

Additionally, the AAAS cites three main reasons for wanting to avoid sequestration cuts:

  • Sequestration will trigger automatic cuts to the Federal budget beginning March 1, 2013.
  • AAAS projects that federal R&D funding will be reduced by $54 billion dollars by the year 2017.
  • Indiscriminate cuts will do significant damage to the scientific enterprise, ending promising research projects, eliminating jobs, and stalling the innovation process.

Only in government is reducing the amount of an increase in spending called a cut. Sorry, but us folks in the real world who know what's going on say let the sequestration happen – the current administration is spending our country into bankruptcy.
