Conservation Tour Takes Shape

CTIC will host its annual Conservation In Action Tour, August 8-9 in Northwest Ohio. This year’s Tour will focus on agriculture’s influence on the environmental and economic health of Maumee River and Bay, as well as Lake Erie. The Tour will highlight agricultural producers implementing innovative conservation practices and solutions to water quality issues.

“We’ll not only showcase farmers applying conservation systems with success, but also discuss important issues facing agriculture within local watersheds. We’ll open dialogue around those issues and possible solutions,”; says Karen Scanlon, CTIC executive director.

Former Conservation In Action Tour participants appreciate the Tour’s focus on solutions rather than just best management practices. And they value interaction with diverse participants — producers, crop consultants, agriculture associations and business, conservation groups, media and local, state and federal government officials.

The Tour will begin with a cocktail social on the evening of Aug. 8 at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Toledo, Ohio. Participants will visit over appetizers and drinks and learn more from experts about water quality issues facing the area. Then they’ll enjoy a river and harbor cruise for a comprehensive introduction to the region and some of its conservation challenges.

On Aug. 9 participants will visit farms and agricultural locations to learn about focused efforts to improve nutrient management and increase adoption of conservation systems. The Tour will present possible technological, financial and educational solutions to issues, such as increased algae, sediment and soluble phosphorus, that impact the river and lake.
