2011 Precision Product Review: SST

“While we see the adoption of precision ag tools as a continued trend in 2011, we are finding less focus on the individual tools available and greater emphasis placed on systems able to work together and more fully understanding and utilizing available offerings,” says SST’s Jeremy Bale. “Growers are gaining a better understanding of the tools available in the market and are starting to ask more of the professionals helping them make decisions for their specific situations. Retailers and consultants are looking for solutions to this by focusing on multi-functional offerings able to work well with other tools allowing them to build a precision ag system supporting the needs of their customers and reducing the time involved while increasing the quality of their work.

“With the tremendous amounts of data being collected we see increased demands for tools able to ingest the raw data and return information providing useful insights into the practices of growers and the conditions they operate in. Retailers and consultants are looking for efficiencies in operations and data management. We believe professionals are making changes in the tools they use in order to consolidate and standardize the various data points being collected. In the same vein, maximizing and reducing their time in the office is top of the list in order to provide more time with clients.

“Our experiences with retailers, consultants and their customers of late have uncovered several specific items of interest. Professionals are looking for more efficient opportunities to communicate with and support their customers, they are asking for more functionality in the tools they employ, they want more from the data they are collecting, they are looking for efficiencies that will reduce the time spent processing data, and they are looking for additional opportunities to provide value and be the go-to person for all their customers’ needs.

“We are continuously working to improve our software and provide the tools necessary for professionals using our products to succeed with their customers. Among other added features in 2011, SST Summit will gain in-season imagery and integrated weather, radar, and forecasting functionality in support of real-time decision making and crop protection, we will also be expanding on our planning features, advancing the logistics features, adding web-based tools for easier communication and interaction between professionals and their customers, and strengthening our precision ag education and training offerings. “We also recognize a great deal of interest has surfaced around wireless data transfers between the office, field, and equipment. Having the data framework of agX allows SST users to work seamlessly with others adopting the same data methodologies and by employing the wireless conduit offered through Slingshot we are helping our customers realize the ability to transfer data to and from the field greatly, reducing the time involved and virtually eliminating data loss.”
