BASF To Feature Iteris Weather Data

Iteris Inc., a provider of intelligent traffic management and weather information solutions, announced that BASF will integrate Iteris’ ClearAg high-resolution field level weather information into its precision ag products, reported FarmChemicalsInternational.com.

Iteris already has similar agreements in place with Agrian, and its related-product WeatherPlot has been licensed by Monsanto, Bayer CropScience, Syngenta and others, says Jeff Keiser, VP Emerging Markets, Iteris.

Under the BASF agreement, Iteris’ ClearAg high-resolution, precision hail information will be integrated into BASF’s suite of precision agronomy sales and customer support tools. BASF sales and customer support staff will have access to Iteris’ field-level hail information, including descriptions of hail events by state, county, township, or zip code; hail amounts; and graphic maps of hail events in most U.S. states with the goal of being able to quickly notify U.S. corn and soybean growers in time for precise crop protection response to potential crop damage or other hail-related issues.

“Hail events will trigger a notification to let people know that a hail event has happened and what their options of handling that are, related to the BASF product line,” says Keiser during a recent phone interview. “The notifications will be pushed out through an Application Program Interface, or API. The benefit of this approach is that our field level weather information that we deliver through our APIs helps BASF determine just exactly which fields are affected and relay that message to their customers that have a crop in that area. ”

While primarily a grower-focused product, Keiser says BASF staff and their retail partners will be relied upon in the process.

“The consumer will be the grower, but actually it will probably be some of BASF’s own staff that will be the delivery mechanism,” he says. “So if they have field support staff, sales staff that are out there with ag retailers, or in some cases working directly with growers, these folks will be how that message gets delivered.”

Going forward, Iteris plans to continue leveraging its field-level weather and soil data to help steward good crop protection practices.

“It might be a different weather parameter or it might be a different product line, but this whole idea of using weather to help guide the crop protection options that are available to the producer, that’s something that is fully in the cross hairs of our ClearAg product line going forward,” says Keiser.
