Great Plains Adds Seeding Control System

Seeding Control System

Great Plains Manufacturing recently introduced its Swath Command planter control system for planting and planter data logging. Great Plains estimates that seed cost savings at 18% by eliminating the cost of over- and double-planting of seed using the new system.

Tru Count clutches drive two row units at a time on 15-inch and Twin-Row models, reducing the overall expense of the system. An air compressor coupled with a small holding tank provides a constant supply of clean air to control the individual clutches.

When used in conjunction with the IntelliAg controller and a reliable GPS signal, Swath Command builds an ‘as applied’ map of the field as it is planted, notes Tom Evans, vice-president of sales and marketing for Great Plains. Swath Command automatically turns row units on and off as the planter passes over areas that have already been planted, such as headlands, waterways, borders and center pivot corners.

Each valve box, which controls the row units in response to the “as applied” map, offers control of four functions. In the standard configuration, two sets of row units are controlled together, but individual row unit control can be attained by simply adding more valves. A 16-row Twin-Row planter, for example, has an 8-section control system as a standard feature of Swath Command.
