GLONASS To Be Added To Mix For OmniSTAR

“Reliability is a good word for the difference,” says OmniSTAR‘s John Pointon. “It’s not necessarily going to be more accurate if you are operating in an area where you have a wide, clear view of the sky and there’s no blockage. But, in a lot of places where you have tree lines and obstacles, growers have problems with dropping GPS satellites because they have fewer satellites in view. With the addition of GLONASS satellites, it will make a big difference in those situations.

The main issue, whether it’s with real time kinematic or with OmniSTAR is that you have to see five satellites — drop below five and you’re out of luck. With GPS and GLONASS you should always be able to see five.” In Europe where small, obstacle-laden fields are the norm, the combination of constellations has provided a more reliable and robust signal with less down time less signal cut.
