Dr. Marvin Lyle Stone and Bonnie Jean Stone, both 65, died after the crash, according to Stillwater police.

Marvin Stone was a Regents Professor at the university for 24 years, lecturing in the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering department. He retired in 2006. A year prior, he was given OSU’s highest faculty award, the Eminent Faculty Award, according to the university. Stone is widely recognized as one of the founding fathers of the groundbreaking Greenseeker, an optical, sensor-based, variable-rate fertilizer and chemical applicator system.

He remained engaged in research as an Emeritus professor and was honored for his innovations at a U.S. Congressional reception in Washington earlier this year.

“Marvin and Bonnie Stone were dedicated OSU employees who will be missed by their many OSU friends, university President Burns Hargis said.

Bonnie Stone had more than 33 years of service with OSU.

“She was an unselfish and dedicated employee in Institutional Research and Information Management,” Hargis said. “She was known for leaving her office and going to a faculty member’s office to help input data.”

Family and friends established the Marvin Stone Scholarship endowment in his honor and the scholarship fund gave its first award in 2007.

“They were two of the most kind, thoughtful and fun loving people I have known. Bonnie was an information systems genius that kept the student information system running smoothly, helping anyone at any time having difficulties with the system. Childless, Bonnie and Marvin were best friends. You could tell by just watching them. The only comfort in their deaths is that neither of them has to go on without the other. Now, they are in heaven and I’m sure the Cowboy family has welcomed them with open arms,” friend Debbie Gimlin wrote in a Facebook update Sunday morning.

Marvin Stone earned bachelors and masters degrees from Colorado State University with a doctorate in engineering science from Washington State University in 1982, according to an OSU staff biography.
