Big Year For Technology

Not since the mid-1990s, when the convergence of GPS availability from the military and the dawning of the Internet, has so much attention been focused on technology in agriculture as it was in July at the 2011 InfoAg Conference. Back then, the conference drew flash crowds from every segment of agriculture trying to figure out what all this technology might mean for the industry. After more than 15 years of development, growing pains, and unbelievable progress (and, of course, in the midst of an incredible boom time for ag) the conference is once again drawing big numbers.

The conference, hosted by the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) in North America, drew 715 attendees, the highest total since the mid-1990s and the sixth consecutive attendance increase for InfoAg since 2001. CropLife Media Group, which produces this publication, and PAQ Interactive serve as partners in the production of the conference. More than 50 oral presentations and over 80 ag industry exhibits — a conference record — were featured.

Dr. Steve Phillips, IPNI Southeast U.S. director and staff lead for the event, said that “the success of InfoAg reflects the interest in precision agricultural practices and technologies, which are growing rapidly throughout the agricultural world.”

Inherent in that technology interest among attendees was a desire to achieve greater efficiency, understand how companies are collaborating and improve agronomic best practices and stewardship. In particular, sessions focused on best fertility management practices were of high interest.

“InfoAg covered all aspects of agriculture, and offered an opportunity to present the 4R Nutrient Stewardship framework within the appropriate context of right-managed systems employing the best technology and practices our current industry and its supporting science can provide,” explained Dr. Paul E. Fixen, IPNI senior vice president, Americas and Oceania Group, and director of research.
