2011 Precision Product Review: OmniSTAR

According to John Pointon, director of sales for OmniSTAR, there are several precision product trends that will drive 2011. As far as OmniSTAR is concerned, the increased adoption of auto-steer and steering assist will continue to dominate our area of the precision ag market, says Pointon.

The relatively low cost of these systems when measured against the significant advantages in terms of efficiency and cost savings (not to mention quality of life) makes them a very attractive option. He adds that the addition of the GLONASS solution in 2010 has greatly improved the perfomance of high accuracy OmniSTAR in areas where satellite blockage has previously been a problem. The OmniSTAR GLONASS capable signal called G2 — which provides a combined GPS and GLONASS solution using orbit and clock correction data for both systems, is offered at the same price as OmniSTAR XP, he says.

As such, it is a very attractive enhancement. The GPS manufacturers should have more options available in 2011 allowing the agriculture community more ways to take advantage of this service.

Also for 2011, OmniSTAR has introduced some improvements to the XP and G2 solutions which will offer an increase in accuracy of more than 25%. We foresee the XP solution providing long term horizontal accuracy of less than four inches at the 99% probability level with pass to pass accuracy of approximately one inch, says Pointon. Existing users can take advantage of these improvements with a simple firmware upgrade.
