Dave Scheiderer (left), Integrated Ag Services, accepts the PrecisionAg Award of Excellence for Crop Adviser/Entrepreneur from PrecisionAg Executive Editor Paul Schrimpf at the 2015 InfoAg Conference in St. Louis, MO.

Dave Scheiderer, founder, Integrated Ag Services (Milford Center, OH), has been named 2015 Precision Ag Crop Adviser/Entrepreneur award winner. Scheiderer was nominated by Dain Burns of Marysville, OH. Since 2007, the PrecisionAg Awards of Excellence have been made possible by the support of the PrecisionAg Institute.

According to Burns, Scheiderer established Integrated Ag Services (IAS) in 1990 offering primarily fertility, as well as weed management and other pest control recommendations. Over the last 25 years IAS has grown to offer, in addition to agricultural consulting services, automated soil sampling, NDVI high resolution imagery, RTK network services, Precision Ag hardware and software sales and service, and independent corn and soybean yield trials for farmers in Ohio and surrounding states. Over this same time, IAS has grown from one to nine full-time employees, including six Certified Crop Advisers.

Specifically, Burns points to Scheiderer’s participation in developing an automated soil sampling solution for IAS as proof that he is invested in advancing the science of precision agriculture.

“Dave recognized that automated soil sampling could allow for higher quality and more dense soil samples to be collected at lower cost compared to traditional soil sampling methods, “ Burns explained via email. “Upon this vision, IAS designed and manufactured one of the first fully automated soil samplers in the U.S., the IAS Precision Soil Sampler (patent pending). This completely automated, tractor mounted system, consistently and uniformly collects geo-referenced soil samples in a wide range of environmental conditions, soil types and cropping systems. The results from high density samples allow IAS clients to maximize both return on investment from inputs and environmental stewardship by more accurately and precisely applying fertility inputs.”

Additionally, last year Scheiderer began the development of the IAS ‘Profit Calculator’ which brings together weather, soil sampling and marketing technologies, combined with traditional crop consulting, to help his clients better track crop development and yield potential and thus, more effectively market grain and manage crop inputs, logistics and financial decisions, according to Burns.

“Dave and his employees consult on over 150,000 acres in west central Ohio that include crop, swine and poultry production,” added Burns when asked about Scheiderer’s involvement in the sustainability-in-agriculture-movement. “Given the overlap of crop and animal production, nutrient management is a high priority for Ohio farmers. Integrated Ag Services has embraced, developed and deployed effective precision farming technologies including the IAS Precision Soil Sampler and a local RTK network to help manage nutrient application and placement, therefore minimizing potential environmental impacts from nutrient runoff into local watersheds.”

Scheiderer and his team with IAS also maintain a healthy level of participation in the local community, according to Burns.

“In March of 2015, IAS employees volunteered at the Ronald McDonald house to prepare and serve a meal to family members who have a child receiving care at Children’s Hospital in Columbus,” Burns wrote. “They also conduct precision farming demonstrations while making presentation on how precision farming is helping address environmental issues and increasing farm production to feed the growing global population. Dave and his employees also attend national and regional farm shows and conferences to keep sharp on new technologies and management strategies that they might consider for their farmer clients.”
