2009 Precision Agriculture Educator/Researcher Of The Year Award

Dr. Clay epitomizes the work of the traditional Land Grant professional, a perfectly balanced three-legged stool of education, research, and extension. As an educator, Dr. Clay has helped more than 30 individuals complete MS or PhD degrees — the majority focused on precision agriculture. He currently has six graduate students, all focused on various aspects of precision ag.

His research has examined yield, nitrogen application, and stress factors using precision agriculture instruments, specifically yield monitors, stable isotope techniques, and remote sensing. More recently, he has examined carbon distribution across field positions to help growers determine maintenance levels of biomass needed to sustain soil carbon levels. This research will serve as important background work when “biomass for fuel production is implemented.

Dr. Clay has written extensively both for a professional and a consumer audience. He has written more than 90 journal articles and book chapters on precision agriculture, and given more than 100 talks. On the consumer side, he has prepared articles for use in newspapers and text books, and his work has been highlighted on ag-oriented television programs. Reaching further, Dr. Clay has worked to develop middle and high school curricula focused on precision farming.
